The number of printed documents the airline industry requires is sky-high, from boarding passes and baggage tags to flight and passenger manifests and more. Moreover, the printing process needs to be seamless for on-time service and customer satisfaction. A major American airline wanted to modernize its airport printing services to scale individual print jobs for both customers and ground staff. Their existing monolithic application was difficult to scale, not equipped to handle traffic spikes, which led to frequent outages causing delay or rescheduling of flights, resulting in huge losses to the airline. 

The Solution

Scalable print-as-a-service: The Collabera team architected a microservices application that offered extremely high print job level service scalability.​ We designed a unified consumable “print as service” that could be called by all airport systems to print travel documents securely and responsively. The unified service app used a model-driven architecture, making it interoperable with all airport applications.​ The AWS infrastructure architecture provided fault tolerance, scalability, high availability, and disaster recovery.

  • Visualized a seamless & enhanced experience for customers at kiosks and service desks ​
  • Application modernization was enabled leveraging microservices architecture using the business domain for decomposition
  • Application resiliency was achieved by implementing the circuit breaker pattern
  • A separate AWS landing zone was provisioned with relaxed access management for quick PoC turnarounds
  • Lambda was used to read an on-premise queue and update custom metrics (queue depth) to CloudWatch
  • AWS Fargate was used for container management and orchestration
  • Kibana with ElastiCache was used for log analysis by the customer IT Team

The solution reduced the processing time to milliseconds in the print system by integrating cloud-based features.​ Collabera implemented a product-like architecture pattern that is repeatable and extendable to multiple modules within the airport portfolio.
