EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Requires trades training or equivalent experience and 3+ years of related machining experience.
  • Requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, decimals, and percent.
  • Requires the ability to operate various equipment.
  • Requires a knowledge of gear principles, tooling, material characteristics, machine shop procedures, abrasives, and general machining practices.
  • Requires the ability to read specifications and gauges and to complete standard production documentation. Requires ability to operator a forklift truck and the ability to lift to 40 lbs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Read detailed blueprint, job order, tooling instructions, and set up sheet for specifications such as dimensions, tolerances, type of holding fixtures, and cutting tools to be used.
  • Mount chucks, fixtures or other work holding devices.  Majority of the work is performed with chucks.
  • Position and secure tools in tool holders on turret and cross slide.
  • Load programs.  Analyze complex program; adjust programmed speeds, feeds, tooling and operating sequences as needed.
  • Position and secure work piece in chuck.
  • Index turret and adjust positions of tools at each station in relation to work piece to assure clearance between moving parts and machining of specified dimensions and tolerances.
  • Operate lathe, direct flow of coolant against tool and work piece.  Frequently operate more than one machine.
  • Use micrometers, vernier, thread gages, bore gages and various other precision measuring equipment to set up, adjust and check dimensions.
  • Troubleshoot lathe, mill and/or hob machine problems; notify supervisor of any machine or quality problems and notify programmer of needed program changes or adjustments.
  • Maintain CNC lathe, mills, and hobs; perform preventive maintenance as needed.
  • Process all necessary documentation and paperwork for processes completed.
  • Train and guide assisting personnel on set ups and operations.  Assist other operators the more difficult set ups and operations.
