Description

The Biologist III is a hands-on downstream process development scientist supporting biologics purification within a pharmaceutical R&D environment. This role requires individual ownership of purification steps, execution of laboratory experiments, and generation of high-quality data to support early- and late-stage process development. The position is bench-based and execution-driven, with a strong focus on protein purification, protein chemistry, and bioanalytical characterization. The Biologist III will work in a collaborative, regulated environment and contribute to process development work intended for internal advancement and publication.

Roles and Responibilites:

  • Execute high-throughput and scale-down robotic purification experiments supporting early- and late-stage biologics process development
  • Own and execute downstream purification activities, including chromatography and filtration
  • Develop, optimize, and characterize robust and economical downstream purification processes for recovery of target proteins from bioreactor harvests
  • Perform hands-on chromatography using ÄKTA systems, including the following modalities:
  • Protein A
  • Ion Exchange (IEX)
  • Hydrophobic Interaction Chromatography (HIC)
  • Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC)
  • Mixed-mode chromatography
  • Conduct laboratory-scale process characterization and support viral clearance studies
  • Support process transfer activities and provide technical support for pilot-scale and GMP manufacturing, as needed
  • Perform filtration techniques (e.g., UF/DF, TFF) and other separation operations relevant to biologics purification
  • Execute bioanalytical assays, including HPLC, ELISA, and SDS-PAGE, to assess process performance and product quality
  • Acquire, analyze, and interpret experimental data to support process decisions
  • Accurately document experimental procedures, data, and conclusions in electronic laboratory notebooks (ELN)
  • Communicate experimental plans, results, and conclusions clearly through written reports, presentations, and verbal discussions
  • Evaluate and implement new purification technologies and innovations to improve process robustness and efficiency
  • Adhere strictly to laboratory safety, data integrity, and compliance standards

Qualifications

  • PhD required in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a closely related discipline
  • 0–2 years of relevant industry experience preferred; highly hands-on academic candidates may be considered
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with downstream purification, including chromatography and filtration
  • Direct experience using ÄKTA chromatography systems
  • Practical knowledge of multiple chromatography modalities (Protein A, IEX, HIC, SEC, mixed-mode)
  • Experience performing bioanalytical assays (HPLC, ELISA, SDS-PAGE)
  • Strong understanding of biologics, protein chemistry, and biochemical principles
  • Proven ability to execute independently at the bench while collaborating within cross-functional teams
  • Strong technical documentation, data analysis, and scientific communication skills
  • Prior industry, internship, or corporate laboratory experience preferred
