Role Overview:
- This role supports aerospace hardware builds and rework.
- The focus is hands-on soldering and rework of high-density PCBs and surface-mount components.
- All work is expected to meet IPC visual acceptability standards.
Practical Soldering Exam
- Candidates will complete a hands-on exam covering the areas below.
1. Surface-Mount Component Soldering
- Solder SMD resistors onto a PCB. Evaluation focuses on:

Accurate placement and alignment

Proper solder wetting and clean fillet formation
-
No tombstoning, solder bridges, or cold joints
-
Final appearance meeting IPC visual standards
2. PCB Rework
- Remove and replace an SMD component. Evaluation includes:

Controlled and appropriate heat application
-
No lifted pads or PCB damage
-
Proper pad cleaning and preparation before reinstallation
-
Clean final result with minimal residue
3. IC Package Handling
- Work with multiple IC package types such as SOIC, QFN, and QFP. Candidates must demonstrate:

Correct IC orientation and Pin 1 identification
-
Precise alignment before soldering
-
Understanding of package-specific handling challenges
4. High-Density PCB Assembly
- Work with tight spacing and fine-pitch components. Evaluated on:

Solder control and consistency

Bridge prevention

Effective use of flux and magnification
5. IPC Standards Awareness
- Formal IPC certification is not required, but candidates must:

Understand what acceptable solder joints look like

Demonstrate attention to inspection quality and workmanship
Preferred Experience

Surface-mount soldering experience (beyond through-hole)

Hands-on PCB rework experience

Familiarity with IC packages and orientation

Use of microscopes or magnification tools
