Job Description

Purpose:

Seeking an experienced Setup Machinist to join an advanced CNC prototype and job shop. This role is critical to high-mix, varying-volume operations and requires precision setup work on CNC mills and lathes to support diverse manufacturing needs.


Typical Day in the Role:

Work Schedule: 6:15 AM – 2:45 PM PST


Key Responsibilities:

  • Set up and prepare CNC mills and lathes for production runs following detailed setup sheets

  • Interpret and execute complex engineering drawings with strong knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)

  • Select and install appropriate tooling, fixtures, and work-holding devices

  • Verify machine calibration and perform first article inspections

  • Make necessary adjustments to ensure parts meet specifications and tolerances

  • Document setup procedures and maintain accurate records in MES (Manufacturing Execution System)

  • Collaborate with programmers and operators to optimize setups for efficiency and quality

  • Troubleshoot setup-related issues and implement corrective actions

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area while following safety protocols


Work Environment:

This role operates in a machine shop environment with exposure to noise, moving machinery, and metalworking fluids. Safety glasses and appropriate PPE are required at all times.


Candidate Requirements:

  • Ability to read G-code (required); programming knowledge is a plus

  • 6+ years of hands-on experience setting up CNC mills or lathes in a production environment

  • Expert-level knowledge of GD&T and ability to read complex engineering drawings

  • Proven ability to follow setup sheets and work instructions accurately

  • Experience using MES systems for job tracking and documentation

  • Strong understanding of machining processes, tooling, and fixturing methods

  • Proficiency with precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, height gauges, CMM)

  • Ability to work independently and make sound setup decisions

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a prototype or job shop environment

  • Familiarity with multiple machine brands and control systems (Fanuc, Haas, Mazak, etc.)

  • Basic CNC programming knowledge

  • Experience with 5-axis or mill-turn machining setups

  • Training in 5S methodology and experience working in a 5S-compliant environment
