Job Title: Mechanical Engineer III  - Mechanical Design Engineer - Manufacturing Test Solutions

Job Location: Westborough, MA 01581

Job Duration: 11 Months (Contract to hire)

Pay Rate: $42.20/hr to $43.20/hr

Job Description:

  • Join our dynamic MTAC (Manufacturing Test) team and shape the future of manufacturing innovation at client Robotics Team! Collaborate with a cross-functional team of test, process, controls, and design engineers to develop cutting-edge automated and manual test solutions for our diverse robotic systems.
  • Design, prototype, iterate, and deploy solutions that directly enhance the quality, accuracy, and speed of our manufacturing operations.
  • See your solutions make a tangible impact on the business and thrive in our fast-paced, startup-like environment as you shape the future of manufacturing at Clients Robotics Team!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders such as R&D, manufacturing, supply chain, and quality to determine key design considerations for test equipment design, fabrication, and implementation.
  • Exhibiting role model behavior of thorough engineering analysis and documentation.
  • Executing projects from a basic concept to production, including developing specifications, design requirements, prototyping, testing, validation, and simplification.
  • Validating concepts through engineering modeling, hand calculations, and prototypes.
  • Performing static and dynamic analysis on mechanical systems using both FEA (Ansys or Solidworks Simulation) and hand calculations.
  • Designing mechanical subsystems with industrial automation systems such as motors, actuators, sensors, safety systems, etc.
  • Creating design documentation, including requirements, engineering design process, functional specifications, drawings, design validation plans/reports, future iterations, compliance, and preventative maintenance.

Group:

  • Join our dynamic MTAC (Manufacturing Test) team and shape the future of manufacturing innovation at clients Robotics Team!

In short, the team:

  • Validates products that are being completed and tested at the end of the line.

Team culture:

  • Mostly individual work on individual designs as well as some collaborative with manufacturing/ processing/ engineering teams
  • 20% meetings, 80% work

Key projects:

  • No specific projects but these candidates will float on whatever work comes in as they complete work

Reason of request:

  • Our Mechanical Test Engineering team is facing a critical staffing shortage due to the recent departure of skilled contractors. To address a backlog of essential projects supporting GRD BAG programs (both MAKE & BUY) and keep pace with increasing NPI demands, we urgently need 2x Mechanical Engineer contractors (green badge).
  • The significant reduction in our MTAC team's Mechanical Engineers (from 4 to 1 over the past year) has strained our capacity. Hiring green-badge contractors represents a cost-effective solution compared to outsourcing test fixture design work to turn-key vendors.
  • Initial quotes indicate a staggering 6x cost increase due to NRE charges, highlighting the financial benefits of this approach.
  • Without additional ME resources, we face severe risks to our GRD BAG programs (both MAKE & BUY).
  • Delivery of essential End-of-Line test fixtures could be significantly delayed, jeopardizing production timelines and potentially delaying product launches. Rushing fixture design due to resource constraints increases the risk of undetected quality issues escaping to the field.

Interaction with team:

  • Mix of working with HM and test engineers who are coming to HM w/ request and the contractor will be given base line of a list of things that need to be completed for a project.
  • They will work with the test engineer and ensure the stakeholders (customer such as process, manufacturing, R&D, etc) requirements are being met.

Training/ Ramp- up

  • 1-2 weeks. If candidate has experience with agile systems PLM then it would fall on the 1 week side.

Role interesting:

  • Working with every team within clients robotics team to a certain degree (engineering, manufacturing, testing team) so you get a broad scope on what you are working on. Easy to see the bigger picture of where you fall in for large scale project
  • Be able to get your hands dirty and look at what supporting clients logistics as a whole is pretty cool

Leadership principles:

  • Ownership
  • Insist on highest standards
  • Bias for Action
  • Deliver results.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent and 5+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Proven experience in scoping, designing, and analyzing mechanical and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Strong understanding of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) principles.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks. Experience with ProE/Creo for part design, advanced assemblies, configuration management, and drawing creation is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping methods (machining, sheet metal, weldments, and additive manufacturing).
  • Proficiency with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software and change management processes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • *Prototyping experience would be a huge plus as they would be able to pick up the work quickly.
  • Experience designing and troubleshooting complex mechanical, electro-mechanical, or pneumatic systems.
  • Excellent technical documentation skills, including creating clear and concise drawings.
  • Experience with PLM systems (Agile, PTC Windchill, Solidworks PDM).
  • Knowledge of volume manufacturing processes.
  • Flexibility to commute to Westborough, MA, 5 day's a week.

Performance Indicators/ how will they be measured:

  • Strong preferred.

Disqualifiers / red flags:

  • If they cant do simple hand calculations or if they see a problem and immediately jump to a simulation tool is a red flag.

Top 3 must-have hard skills:

  • Basic technical skills, should be able to think problems through.
  • Good in documentation/ communication skills (working with multiple stakeholders, ensuring you are organized is important)
  • Needs experience within solid works.
