Change and Release management in the context of SAP involves orchestrating the successful deployment of changes (transports, ToC’s, ChaRM change requests, manual, etc) throughout the SAP landscape and finally managing the import of this project wide sequenced list of changes into the production systems during cutover.
 
Key tasks and responsibilities for the SAP Change/Release Manager include:
  • Development, management and full ownership of the Change/Release Plan
  • Work together with all SAP project teams to understand all project changes needed for Production Cutover.
  • Create a well-planned out listing of project changes, must be detailed and sequenced listing of every change (transports, ToC’s, ChaRM change requests, manual, etc) in each project or dependent system, with required change dependencies listed (such as a sequence dependency or a change in separate system, etc) and dependencies communicated to all teams impacted.
  • Schedule multiple releases (separate timeboxes) for multiple systems will be required to  due to dependencies and help reduce complexity.
  • The plan will need to be in alignment with the current project sprint plans and any other dependent projects will need to be included and coordinated.
  • Mid-stream changes in a project will be happening, therefore they will need to be assessed and incorporated into the plan, with impacts and dependencies outlined.
  • Conduct and run all Change/Release management meetings to gather change information, keep all informed of dependencies, etc
  • Work closely with the Cutover Manager, Functional and Technical teams to ensure all project changes are planned and are successfully moved into the project systems on time during each project phase
 
Key skills required for the SAP Change/Release Manager include:
  • Detail oriented, takes ownership, identifies/resolves issues quickly
  • Ability to drive/lead meetings
  • Experience in leading SAP Change/Release Management is a must
  • Experience with SAP’s tools/process (such as transports, ChaRM, etc) is a must
  • MS Excel/MS Project experience
  • Project Management skills are an asset
