Job Description:
Job Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Company’s growing Genetic Medicine group at Company South San Fransisco is seeking a highly motivated Associate Scientist to apply cutting-edge technologies to deliver innovative new therapies.
  • As an integral member of the Genetic Medicine Group, this individual will assist in activities related to lipid nanoparticle (LNP)-mRNA production, process development/optimization, and characterization.
  • The successful candidate will have familiarity with or prior exposure to laboratory instrumentation/methods related to LNP formulation development, such as microfluidic mixers, dynamic light scattering, membrane-based filtration/dialysis, and fluorescent plate-based assays.
  • The successful candidate is expected to either show potential in or have hands-on experience to produce and evaluate LNPs with the aim of supporting pipeline projects as well as supporting general laboratory activities.
  • As one of the key team members this individual will work with the manager and scientists across different functional groups to help discover and develop next generation non-viral genetic medicine.
  • The candidate will need to have excellent verbal and written skills and the ability to clearly present scientific concepts and results.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in production and characterization of mRNA-LNP formulations to support internal programs.
  • Assist in lipid and reagent preparation for manufacturing process as well as aliquoting and accurate labeling for storage and subsequent stability analysis.
  • Familiarity with analytical techniques including but not limited to DLS, HPLC, ELISA, SEC, bioconjugation and nucleic acid characterization.
  • Work closely with manager and cross-functional team members on multiple projects simultaneously to collect and analyze data on a per project basis.
  • Under manager’s supervision, interpret, summarize experimental data, and present experimental results at meetings as needed.
  • Assist in ordering supplies and reagents from internal inventory and external vendors necessary to support the projects.
  • Generate reliable and reproducible data in a timely manner. Read and adapt scientific literature to accomplish assignments.
  • Maintain documentation, databases and laboratory electronic notebooks in compliance with the Company Laboratory Notebook Policy.
  • Remain compliant with all departmental and corporate training.

Key Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Pharmaceutical Science or a related field with a minimum of 0-2 years of relevant industry experience. Experience with nanoparticle design and characterization methods is preferred.
  • Self-motivated, hard-working, detail-oriented, resourceful, and able to work in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Good computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and relevant scientific software such as Prism.
  • Hands-on experience with nucleic acid characterization and nanoparticle formulation is a plus.
  • Hands on experience with chemical conjugation to lipid and analytics is a plus.
  • Having a basic understanding of immunology and cancer biology is a plus.

  • BS or MS in Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Science or related field- 0-3 years’ experience
  • mRNA-loaded Lipid Nanoparticle Formulation & Characterization experience
  • Techniques such as DLS, HPLC, SEC, RiboGreen
  • Worked with PNI Microfluidic Mixer or Syringe Pump Mixer
  • Performed purification using dialysis cartridges or Amicon centrifuge tubes.
